Version 1.3 Current
July 2026

Version 1.3 is the biggest update since launch. It brings Wainwright's second book into the app, a new Walks hub on the Map tab, a live lock-screen activity during navigation, home screen widgets, and a refreshed Profile tab — all alongside a raft of smaller improvements.

For Everyone
Your walks, in one place
A new Walks section on the Map tab collects your lifetime stats and your saved routes so you can find what you need without switching tabs. Total distance, ascent, and walk count update in real time as you log completions.
Find it: Map tab → Walks.
Refreshed Profile
The Profile tab has been redesigned around two progress cards — one per list you're tracking — and a horizontal achievements strip that surfaces recent unlocks at a glance. Your overall progress ring is still there, now joined by per-book breakdowns inline.
Find it: Profile tab.
Revisited fells
Fells you've climbed more than once are now visually distinct on both the map and checklist — a subtle marker so repeat baggers can see their second (or third, or tenth) ascents at a glance without any extra tapping.
Find it: Map tab or Checklist tab — any fell with multiple completions.
Companion+
Outlying Fells of Lakeland
Wainwright's second book — the 116 Outlying Fells — is now in the app. Switch between the 214 and the Outlying list from the map title or checklist header. Both lists get full weather forecasts, walking routes, and their own achievement trees, so tackling the complete Wainwright collection is now a single-app endeavour.
Find it: Map tab or Checklist → tap the list name to switch.
Follow-Along Maps
A new navigation mode for walkers who want a live map without the turn-by-turn guidance. The map follows your position, your breadcrumb trail builds behind you, and remaining summits on the route are marked ahead. When you're done, close out with a walk summary and a direct prompt to log completions.
Find it: Route Preview → Follow Along.
Achievement notifications
A badge on the Profile tab now appears the moment you unlock something new — no need to check the achievements list manually. Tap the badge to see what you've earned, read the unlock criteria, and share the achievement card if you want to post it.
Find it: Profile tab → badge appears automatically on new unlock.
Companion Pro
Live Activity with turn directions
During active navigation your Dynamic Island and lock screen show a live activity: distance and ascent to the next summit, total elapsed time, and a direction arrow that rotates to show which way you need to head. The lock screen view adds a route progress bar and your distance walked. No need to unlock your phone on the hill.
Find it: Appears automatically during navigation on supported iPhones. Customise slots in Settings → Navigation.
Home screen widget
Add a progress widget to your home screen or lock screen showing your completion count, progress ring, and list name. Available in small, medium, and circular (lock screen) formats. Tapping the widget opens directly to the Checklist tab.
Find it: Long-press your home screen → Edit → + → search for Wainwright Companion.
Fixes
Night Owl achievement
Fixed an issue where manually logging a completion could incorrectly unlock the Night Owl achievement (awarded for a summit at 8 pm or later) regardless of the date selected. New completions are unaffected. If an existing manually-logged entry triggered this incorrectly, open it in the Checklist, tap Edit, and save — the timestamp will be corrected automatically.
Version 1.2.4
May 2026
For Everyone
Achievement dates stay correct
Multi-summit milestones such as Hat Trick and High Five now retain their original unlock date when you set a new biggest-day record in a later walk, rather than shifting to the date of the more recent outing.
Companion Pro
Fell names while navigating
Summit markers along your active route now display the fell name as a label during navigation, making it easier to identify approaching peaks at a glance.
Find it: Active Navigation → map view.
Fewer false off-route alerts
Off-route detection is significantly more accurate on long, straight ridge sections where route waypoints are widely spaced. The previous version could nudge you even when you were walking exactly where you should be.
Version 1.2.3
May 2026
Fixes
Launch crash fix
Fixes a rare crash on launch that could occur after completing a classic horseshoe walk such as the Coledale Horseshoe.
Version 1.2
May 2026

Version 1.2 focuses on navigation reliability and making routes a social thing. Walks that get interrupted can now be resumed, planned routes can be shared with fellow baggers, and the social feed has been redesigned to make it easier to follow what your friends are up to.

For Everyone
Difficulty on the map
When you zoom out to see the region clusters, each bubble now shows how many fells match your current difficulty filter — not just the total. A quick way to see which areas of the Lakes suit the kind of day you have in mind.
Find it: Map tab → zoom out → apply a difficulty filter.
Companion+
Share your routes
Any route you've planned can now be posted to the social feed. Anyone following you can save it directly to their own route library and navigate it from there — no need to recreate the plan from scratch.
Find it: Route Planner → open a saved route → tap the share icon → Share to Social Feed.
New share card templates
Three polished share card formats are now available: a stats card with your walk summary, a route map card with your actual GPS overlay, and a summit card for individual fell completions. All rendered at 3× scale for sharp social posts.
Find it: Walk Summary → share icon, or Fell Detail → ⋯ menu → Share.
Refreshed social feed
The activity feed has a cleaner layout — a consolidated profile card, clearer fell names in activity headers, and community stats (total distance covered, most popular fells) visible inline without having to scroll to find them.
Find it: Social tab.
Companion Pro
Hike resume
If your phone runs out of battery, the app is force-closed, or iOS terminates it mid-walk, your GPS track, timing, route position, and any summits already bagged are saved automatically. Open the app when you're ready and pick up exactly where you left off — a green banner on the Checklist tab will be waiting for you.
Find it: Happens automatically during active navigation. Resume from the Checklist tab banner.
Drag waypoints
Long-press any waypoint pin in the route planner to pick it up and drag it to a new position on the map. The route recalculates immediately when you release. No need to delete and re-add a stop to fine-tune a detour.
Find it: Route Planner → long-press a waypoint pin → drag to reposition.
Summit alerts while pocketed
The app now fires a summit detection notification even when running in the background, so you can keep your phone in your jacket pocket during the approach. A notification appears when you're within range — tap it to log the completion on the spot.
Find it: Requires notification permission. Works automatically during active navigation.
Elevation chart after rerouting
If you take a different path mid-walk — a detour, a shortcut, or an unplanned scramble — the elevation chart now re-anchors to your current position rather than showing a flat line for the section you diverged from.
Find it: Active Navigation → elevation strip at the bottom of the screen.
Version 1.1
March 2026

The first major update after launch. Version 1.1 added over 200 walking routes across all 214 fells, a full subscription tier system (Companion+ and Companion Pro), weather-ranked suggestions for planning days out, and HealthKit integration for walkers who track their fitness.

For Everyone
All 214 fells, 200 routes
Every Wainwright now has at least one walking route: a map, an elevation profile, a difficulty rating, and a Naismith-estimated time. Popular fells like Helvellyn and Scafell Pike have multiple options including circular walks and ridge routes.
Find it: Any Fell Detail view → Routes section.
Bagging made simple
Log a completion with a date, star rating, personal notes, up to five photos, the weather you experienced, and the names of people you walked with. The app supports repeat ascents, so every time you bag a fell counts.
Find it: Fell Detail → Mark as Completed, or during active navigation when summit detection fires in Pro.
Your progress, at a glance
The Stats tab shows your overall progress ring, total distance and ascent across all tracked walks, your current weekly streak, and a breakdown of completion progress across all seven Wainwright books.
Find it: Profile tab → Stats section.
Companion+
Plan Ahead
The Suggestions tab now shows a six-day view of your options, ranked by weather forecast for each day. The best walking day is highlighted automatically — clear sky, reasonable wind, good visibility at summit level. Useful for planning a trip rather than just deciding on the morning.
Find it: Suggestions tab → Plan Ahead.
Weather safety ratings
Every fell forecast now carries a Green, Amber, or Red safety rating. Temperature and wind speed are corrected for the fell's actual altitude — what the weather station reads at valley level is rarely what you'll experience on the summit of Scafell Pike in winter.
Find it: Fell Detail → tap the weather badge to expand.
54 achievements
Milestones for first completions, full books, total distance and ascent records, weekly streaks, and more. A toast notification appears when you earn one, and your full achievement collection is visible in the Stats tab.
Find it: Profile tab → Achievements section.
Companion Pro
GPS navigation
Follow any route turn-by-turn with a live breadcrumb trail and three-level off-route alerts (amber at 50m, red at 100m, critical at 200m). Summit detection prompts you to log a completion when you reach the top. Every tracked walk is automatically saved as a Hiking workout in the Health app.
Find it: Any Route Preview → Start Navigation.
Route planner
Build custom multi-fell walks from scratch. Choose up to eight summits, pick a start point from 116 car parks (with fee information), and the app generates a hiking-optimised route using BRouter. Circular, out-and-back, and point-to-point all supported.
Find it: Map tab → Route Planner button.
Walk summary
After every tracked walk, a full summary shows your total distance, ascent, time, moving pace, and maximum altitude reached. A map overlay compares your actual GPS track to the planned route so you can see exactly where you diverged.
Find it: Appears automatically at the end of active navigation, or tap any walk in Walk History.
